Jamie-louise's Reusable Nappy Journey

Jamie-louise is a long time follower and supporter of the Nappy Library! As always, these stories are just fascinating - everyone's journey is different. If you enjoyed Jamie-louise's story, check out the other journeys we have here.

Why did you start thinking about using cloth nappies?

I started thinking about cloth when I was pregnant as climate change really worries me and I wanted to make sure I was doing my “bit” to make a change.

When did you start looking into it?

I started looking whilst pregnant but it felt too expensive to commit before baby was here. My friend from work was using cloth and lent me a few to start off trialling. She also gave me some hints and tips on buying second hand - after that I was hooked!

What were any concerns/misconceptions you had before you started? How did you overcome these?

I think like most people I worried about leaks and poo post weaning - I did a lot of reading about different types of nappies and boosters and the leaks were sorted pretty quickly. I work as a nurse so the poo didn’t phase me too much but with a bit of experimenting with liners a found a method that worked for us.

When did you start using cloth nappies?

My little was around 12 weeks when I started - I tried early but he was skinny and I couldn’t get the legs to fit on my birth to potty (BTP) nappies.

How did you find it?

I loved it, I loved the cute patterns and the big cloth bum! I loved the fact I had no more poonamis and very little nappy rash.

How did you get past any issues you found? Where did you go for advice?

I started off with quite cheap Alva’s and then committed to more expensive brands over time, I found a little online community where tips and tricks were shared and it made a huge difference.

Any tips or tricks?
